Works a treat....my first time using the trap we got over 300 tadpoles 😁
It works well at catching tadpoles in our dam but overnight we returned to find the container practically full of silver perch fingerlings. So unfortunately the lures also attract native fish which is an issue.
Hi Julie, we are happy to hear the trap worked for you in trapping cane toad tadpoles. Tadpoles are most active during the day so we generally recommend not leaving the trap in the water overnight. The lure itself does not attract fish, the fish may have swum into the trap following other food or if the water was warmer in their overnight. The lure itself ONLY attracts cane toad tadpoles as it is made from cane toad glands. It utilises the natural canabilistic nature of cane toad tadpoles which think the scent being released from the lure is from other cane toad eggs, and so they swim in to eat the eggs. We do always recommend in our instruction manual to check the trap for by-catch regardless as sometimes fish may swim inside for those other reasons listed. Hope these tips can help you for future trapping sessions!
The day the trap and lures arrived I deployed it in a creek near our house. Deployment was easy and quick. The provided guide is a great reference. In the first 6 hrs caught 86 tadpoles! In 2 days I had completely cleared the pool of tadpoles removing 164 tadpoles. This is a great product that anyone can use, and is very effective at cane toad tadpole trapping.
Thank you Melissa! We're glad to hear you have found the trap easy to use and that you've successfully removed all those cane toad tadpoles.
The trap caught our fish but not the tadpoles. It was very disappointing.
Hi Mike,
Thank you for your review and we are sorry to hear about your disappointing results, small fish may accidentally swim into the trap particularly if there is excessive water movement (eg. from a water pump/filter). However, it is strange to hear that you were unable to catch any of the tadpoles. Can you please confirm if the trap was placed as close as possible to a confirmed swarm of cane toad tadpoles?
We would like to help you improve your future trapping results, please email us at canetoads@watergum.org so we may assist further.
Best regards,
Watergum Cane Toad Team
Just ordered a second kit. The first one the lid cracked and went brittle. The base is fine, but of course wont work without the lid. The concept is great and works really well which is why I have bought a second one.
